Comcast will extend its cable system, bringing renewed hope of improved cyberspace quality to long-time underserved residents of north Cape Coral.

"We are very happy about this partnership with the City of Greatcoat Coral," wrote Mindy Kramer, vice president of public relations for Comcast'due south Florida region, in an email argument.

The understanding with the city volition bring Xfinity products and services to the northwest and northeast areas of the city for the first time in what's described as underserved and or unserved areas of the city, according to Kramer.

The project's estimated toll is more than $14 million, and the city will reimburse $500,000 to Comcast. The city council approved the plan and payment on Nov 17.

Comcast'south network is bachelor throughout the rest of Cape Coral, and so this expansion will complete the visitor'south coverage of the urban center.

Residents respond

Residents are excited about the expansion, said John Bashaw, president of the Northwest Greatcoat Coral Neighborhood Association.

"We're excited considering many people have reached out saying that the broadband adequacy in the northwest isn't acceptable, and they're not able to do their jobs," Bashaw said.

He said many residents chosen the organization to complain about wearisome or unstable internet that cause bug such as dropped zoom calls or unreliable cyberspace that makes information technology hard to piece of work from abode.

"It's common for somebody to reach out to the association or reach out to me directly and say, 'please do something'," Bashaw said.

The association has advocated for the members at council meetings and in talks with the city.

He said the expansion is great step, and he hopes that future developments focus on more populated areas just north of Pine Island Route.

Cape Coral has 194,016 citizens and it expected to have more than 430,000 by 2070, with about of the growth expected in the ii northward quadrants.

"We're very beholden of the hard work that the city has done, and as well our Commune Councilmember Keith Long," Bashaw said. "Our goal is that everyone north of Pine Island Route gets access."

Long said the metropolis took initiative and brought Comcast to the table because of regulations that stopped them from acting faster.

Florida preempted local government potency on regulation that immune them to enter franchise agreements with cable providers in 2011, Long said.

The legislation canceled all existing agreements, and service providers had unilateral authority to choose where and when they placed their cable infrastructure.

"Up to this betoken, they largely ignored north greatcoat every bit in their stance the density was not there to justify the infrastructure investment," Long said. "This agreement changes that."

Kick-off date

There's no set date considering information technology will depend on when permits are approved.

"There is a procedure that has to take place, in that location has to be a blueprint," Mayor John Gunter said. "This isn't something that will happen over night, but at least we have the brawl rolling."

Per the agreement, Comcast will begin piece of work fourteen days afterwards permits are granted with construction expected to accept between six to 12 months.

"We've been working closely with the city on this projection, and we are committed to completing this network expansion within the next 12 months," Kramer said.

Gunter reiterated that the goal of the city is to evangelize equal coverage to all residents, and they will work to bring the same quality the people of south Cape Coral have to all residents north of Pine Isle Road.

"We have to look at more of a broad sense throughout our entire city to make sure we take the same coverage for everyone," he said.
